A wedding reception is a time to share the joy with the wedded couple. It could be a traditional affair, with music, drinks, food, and dancing; or it could be a bit more interactive and include games and activities to get the guests more involved. This non-traditional approach could be fun, but you must consider the type of guests that you have invited. As very formal and traditional personalities will feel uncomfortable playing games or not enjoy themselves. If you feel confident enough to have some games and activities at your wedding reception, here are some simple ideas. You can come up with as many as you want, according to your taste and interests.

Have each table request their favorite wedding songs or dances and have them on the dance floor with you. Have games by tables. A popular one is to have the DJ request something and the table that comes up with it will get a point. For example, someone with red hair, or a girl in a purple dress … The table with the most points gets a prize or gift to share. You will have to think of something that the people at the table can all share, or have small individual favors.

Have a series of questions about you and your groom, and see how many the guest at each table can get right. The table with the most questions right will be the winner. The DJ or best man can be the one to ask the questions. For example, if the best man asks the questions, the maid of honor can keep score. Not only will this game create interaction between your guests, it will also get them to know you better as a couple. Other guests who are not that close will get to know the two of you also.

You can have an eating cake contest with the groom’s friends – use small cupcakes for this. Alternatively, your can have a dancing competition with the wedding party or by table. Come up with fun activities that will make the atmosphere light, and of course, never force anyone to participate. If you want to have these types of activities but are not sure of which activities to choose, get ideas from your wedding planner, or family and friends.

People like to be part of a happy event such as a wedding, and they like to participate in making the day a happy and memorable one for the couple. Most likely, the atmosphere will be cheerful and everyone will enjoy themselves by either actively participating or by watching others participate and have fun. This will get guests to mingle and if you do not have a dancing crowd at the reception, these types of games will help keep the ambiance alive. It does not matter if your wedding is a small or large one; it works well for any size wedding. By keeping a light and fun atmosphere, the crowd will celebrate longer and avoid going home soon, as it happens on some weddings lacking entertainment.
